Breed Pairs: All dogs should be bred for quality, with breeder giving equal consideration
to type, temperament, health and soundness. Nervous or aggressive dogs, or those with a known genetic defect, should
not be used for breeding.
Acceptable breedings
will be Biewer to Biewer only. Those bred should be healthy, pedigreed Biewers as described by the adopted BBCA Standard.
No
Biewer breeder shall deliberately inter-breed a Biewer with another breed, (i.e., Maltese with a Biewer). If an accidental
breeding occurs, the resulting puppies must be spayed/neutered and placed in pet homes. No dogs or bitches should be
bred to pet store stock. Bitches and Studs should be screened
prior to breeding for infectious and hereditary diseases by a qualified veterinarian.
BBCA requires our breeding pairs to have a Bile Acid Test as well as DNA testing with MMI Genomics Lab We recommend
our breeding pairs to have a liver/kidney blood panel, Patella test, Brucellosis test, and CERF testing. Breeding Duration:
Bitches: Bitches
should not be bred before 12 months of age, or until her second estrous cycle. Bitches should not be bred after the
age of 8 years. Number of Litters: Bitches are
not to be bred back to back more than three (3) times, producing no more than two (2) litters in twelve (12) month span.
Breeders are most in tune with their bitches and they know what is best for them and their health. Stud Dog: The Stud Dog should be
used selectively. He should not be bred to unregistered bitches. He should be least twelve (12) months of age.
It is recommended that written contracts clearly state all arrangements agreed to by the breeder/client and signed by both
with a copy for each individual, and also include any necessary testing. No age limit is planned for the stud providing
he is healthy. If the stud dog is over 10 years old he will need a vet certification of health and a semen evaluation.
Litters: Puppies
must be kept until at least 12 weeks of age. The breeder is obligated to have the puppies properly inoculated, de-wormed
and fecal tested. Pups will be either random Bile Acid tested, liver enzyme tested or Protein C tested, prior to leaving
the breeder for new owners. The decision regarding which test will remain with the Breeder and their vet. If a
pup has elevated numbers on a random bile acid test or liver enzyme test then a full liver panel and pre & post bile acid
is required. Tail docking is not permitted. Dew claws may or may not be removed at the owner's discretion.
Shipment of puppies shall not occur before 12 weeks to avoid episodes of potentially fatal hypoglycemia.
Identification: Permanent
identification (Micro-chip or tattoo) is not mandatory, but left to the breeder's discretion. DNA identification
is mandatory on all breeding pairs and optional for puppies and spayed or neutered pets.
Health Screening: Breeders will
provide full disclosure of any and all genetic abnormalities in the bloodlines and progeny, including appropriate pedigrees,
in order to facilitate research in avoiding the passage of these defects. Breeders will agree to advise the President
of the BBCA if they produce a puppy with liver shunt or any other life threatening congenital disease. They agree to
provide the pedigrees of the mother and father. The breeder further agrees to NEVER breed the same sire and dam together
again. The siblings of the affected puppies should be neutered or spayed and sold as pets. If siblings were sold
prior to breeder knowledge of the shunt, every effort should be made to encourage the new owner NOT to breed these puppies.
As of May 4, 2009, BBCA members voted to have a
mandatory Puppy Wellness Form be filled out by the BBCA breeders attending Veterinarians. The testing of puppies is
to take place PRIOR to the pup leaving the Breeder, and the Puppy Wellness Form, along with the Lab work, is to be sent to
the Health Department PRIOR to placement. If a Breeder is keeping back a puppy, or if the puppy is still looking to
be placed, the Breeder then has up to 5 months after whelping to ensure the puppy has been tested and the forms be submitted
to the Health Department.
